During the 11-year Sierra Leone Civil War, which began in '91, six nonviolent musicians were displaced to Guinea, where they began creating a special blend of roots reggae, West African rhythms and social awareness. Now spreading their message across the globe, the Refugees say through music they were able to find a place of refuge, a sense of purpose and a source of power. Their self-titled documentary explains the band's journey and helps illuminate their peaceful vision for the world. Rise and Shine -- their first in six years -- takes their worldly reggae sound to new levels.

"Their rebel spirit and unflagging positivity remain intact, and their groove is even tougher." - The Boston Phoenix

"It is a testament to the unbreakable human spirit." - Relix
