Improvisation, where music is concerned, is the act of composing or arranging without previous preparation. It is also a hallmark of traditional jazz and what Spyro Gyra lives and breathes.
Taking cues from Weather Report and Return to Forever, Spyro Gyra creates a cultivated brand of pop-fusion which dazzles music lovers across the world. They are an artful blend of R&B, pop, Caribbean, and jazz; with a style equally focused on technicality and dance-ability. It comes as no surprise that Spyro Gyra is one of the most enduring and popular acts in contemporary jazz. See them make their StageOne return in 2016.
It’s been more than 20 years since Ben Ellman, Robert Mercurio, Stanton Moore, Jeff Raines and Rich Vogel began exploring the seemingly limitless musical possibilities born out of their work together as Galactic. Since then, the seminal New Orleans band has consistently pushed artistic boundaries on the road and in the studio, approaching their music with open ears and drawing inspiration as much from the sounds bubbling up from their city’s streets as they do from each other.
A key part of that creative spark comes from the teamwork of Mercurio and Ellman, whose ever-evolving production and arranging skills helped usher the band into a new phase of studio work beginning with the loop-centric “Ruckus” in 2007. A series of albums focused around specific concepts followed, as did collaborations with guests hailing from worlds outside the one Galactic calls its own.
On “Into the Deep,” the band members look within themselves instead, drawing inspiration from people and ideas that have long been close to their hearts – and, in turn, close to the development of their unique sound. Shot through with soul, funk, blues and rock, the result is an organic riff on elements of Galactic’s past, filtered through the lens of where they’re headed in 2015.
As said by Paste Magazine, “Musically, the album bears all the hallmarks of vintage funk and R&B, but inventive production techniques help distinguish the band from their contemporaries.” ‘Into the Deep,’ is a menagerie of both old and new and will make ya shake ya booty.

The James Hunter Six has performed on StageOne four times over the last two years and its no wonder. If Otis Redding, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin were the gold standard by which all soul singing is measured, he is soul singing at its finest. The music of James Hunter Six purposely resembles soul music from the 60s more than anything from the last 40 years.
In the words of Van Morrison, Hunter is “one of the best voices and best kept secrets in British R&B.”

From his well-crafted, introspective songwriting to the beautiful melodies he creates, to the warmth he generates during his live performances, Taylor has mastered the craft of being able to take his listeners on a journey.

If you listened to bluegrass, folk, country or rock music during the 1970s, it was hard to miss the songs or musicianship of singer-songwriter David Bromberg. Across his career, Bromberg has played guitar, dobro, fiddle, and mandolin with artists like Bob Dylan, Carly Simon, the Eagles, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, and many more.
Bromberg is one of the most engaging, indeed mesmerizing, of performers. It’ll be a treat to hear him and his quintet perform their mix of bluegrass, country, R&B, and blues that’s united by Bromberg’s soulful picking.
This December "the Jimi Hendrix of the violin” (New York Times) visits StageOne for an exceptional night of Irish music. Eileen Ivers in a nine-time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion whose performances range from the London Symphony Orchestra to Riverdance all the way to sharing stages with Sting, Hall & Oates, and Patti Smith.
She electrifies the crowd with a dazzling show of virtuoso playing that bridges the gap between her celtic roots and styles ranging from jazz, salsa to funk, rock, and even electronica.
As said by The Boston Globe, “Her playing a tradition-rich yet adventurous, spiced with world, jazz and pop."
Changing the sound of 70s music with hits including ‘Heard It in a Love Song’ and ‘Can’t You See,’ Marshall Tucker Band has been one of the greatest Southern rock bands of all time. Decades later, all six men know how to rock out and move audiences. They sing with passion and heart, dusting off hits and introducing them to a brand new crowd.
Thanks to the expanding scope of today’s music, a new generation of fans is learning what the rest of their fans have known for so long; good music knows no boundaries.

A family folk-rock act from North Carolina, Delta Rae understands what the key to great Americana is: emotional authenticity. It's impossible to listen to the otherworldly wails of Elizabeth and Brittany and not be moved. This group is equal parts Bruce Springsteen and Fleetwood Mac, but with a modern, youthful quality that sets them apart.
On their Winter Acoustic Tour, expect stripped-down Delta Rae favorites, rarer b-sides from “Carry the Fire” and “After It All,” the holiday songs we love most, and some surprises. Stay tuned as Delta Rae releases videos between now and tour to give you a taste of the acoustic Delta Rae experience.

Alongside Michelle Branch, Anna Nalick, and Sara Bareilles, Vanessa Carlton helped to usher in a new era of female singer songwriters. Her first single, “A Thousand Miles” was one of the biggest songs of 2002 and continues to get consistent airplay on radio and in TV and film. Other hits include “Ordinary Day,” “White Houses,” and her newest release “Blue Pool.”
"Her timbre is still cute and girlish, but it's far more restrained and controlled than in the past. There are hints of mentor Stevie Nicks's delivery style." - Slant Magazine
More than just another local band, the gutsy alt-rockers in the Alternate Routes are each close personal friends of FTC.
The Routes are guitar rockers who write anthemic rock & roll songs with alluring melodies as well as some lighter, folky Americana tunes. Their folk-tinged rock storytelling has carried them around the country, and landed them a performance on Craig Ferguson, and a song featured in NBC’s coverage of the Olympics.

When Fuzz and Carrie Sangiovanni of Caravan of Thieves first met, there was an instant spark, an intimate connection and passion for life and adventure, which has continued through their personal and artistic relationship. In the spring of 2008, Fuzz and Carrie extended their journey to include fiery violinist Ben Dean and double bass maestro, Brian Anderson completing their colorful vision. Since then, the four of them ran away from home and never looked back.
Caravan of Thieves hearken back to a day gone by, the swing era, when music and entertainment reached a creative height but was not yet diluted by big business and commercialism. Tin pan alley songwriters, late romantic and early 20th century classical composers, early jazz and swing musicians and vaudeville entertainers guided them to the sound they made their own. Artists such as Duke Ellington and Django Reinhardt brought an elegance and style along with a fun and free spirit and precision craftsmanship to their music, which Caravan have taken in and absorbed.
“When it comes to this Caravan Of Thieves the only thing you have to worry about them stealing is your heart, as their music sweeps you across the dance floor and then bounces your around quite a bit.” – Blog Critics Magazine
“There's something about the band's witty, spirited gypsy folk-jazz that is so new and yet so familiar all at once.” – Washington Post

If you turned on a radio in 1979, there was very good chance you'd hear the music of Rickie Lee Jones. At only 24, she leapt onto the world stage with her big single "Chuck E.'s in Love." Rolling Stone called her "the dutchess of coolsville."

Assembly of Dust
FOR FANS OF: Railroad Earth / moe. / String Cheese Incident
Over the last ten years Assembly of Dust has crafted a unique sound that recalls the likes of The Band, Traffic and Neil Young. They have taken that early 70's Americana swagger, put their own funky spin on it, and earned comparisons to the next generation of Americana heroes including Ryan Adams, Mumford and Sons, and Wilco. Hooky melodies, poetic lyrics, and a profound depth of musicianship prompted USA Today to say Assembly of Dust has what it takes to “dazzle the Alt-Country universe.”
The New York Times praised saying that AOD “puts forth one of the more lucid songwriting efforts to emerge in the long wake of the Grateful Dead.”
Melding the deep grooves of blues and R&B with guitar work that recalls J.J. Cale and Little Feat, Assembly of Dust is a New York-based quintet which has developed a sizable following on the East Coast for their rich country-accented melodies and impressive chops. Assembly of Dust was formed by lead vocalist and songwriter Reid Genauer after the breakup of his band Strangefolk.
Their latest release, Sun Shot, is one part Singer-Songwriter, one part Alt-Country and one part Rock and Roll, but the thread tying it all together is Genauer's heartfelt and beautifully written lyrics. In 2009 The New York Times praised Genauer's songwriting skills as some of the most eloquent “to emerge in the long wake of the Grateful Dead” and the songs on Sun Shot may be the best work of his career."
Dirty blues oozes out of Little Hurricane, who turn past their garage-rock influences to create a unique, personal sound. This duo boast female drummer Celeste “CC” Spina and the hulky guitar riffs of Anthony “Tone” Catalano. It’s no wonder these guys have already made it from Lollapalooza to SXSW. Little Hurricane is on the rise and for anyone who is a fan of The Black Keys, Gary Clark Jr., or Bronze Radio Return.
Led by a vocalist and axe man whose gritting voice matches the bourbon-soaked smokiness of Tom Waits, July Talk is straight out of blue-rock-roots land, backed by amped up heavy rock. He and female vocalist Fay sing with the chemistry of an old married couple. These two fire it up on the stage making it for a seriously dirty dance party.

Jon McLaughlin is an artist on the crest of a personal renaissance. Since parting ways with Island Records he has experienced a groundswell of support and inspiration. His latest effort, Forever If Ever, is a fresh and honest new chapter for the Academy Award nominated singer songwriter. “There isn’t a note on the record that I didn’t spend hours scrutinizing over,“ says Jon, “I feel like it’s a real connection to me.” The record, released on Razor and Tie, gave him an opportunity to produce without the scrutiny of a major label. The lyrics are more personal this time around, and the attention paid to each tone gives the album a cleansing variety. Like his influences (think Billy Joel, Elton John, and Ben Folds) McLaughlin’s songs are sometimes topical, often personal, and always on point.

With a masterful balance of rock, jazz, and blues, Edgar Winter helped create some of the most iconic hits of the 1970’s including “Free Ride,” and the unforgettable instrumental, “Frankenstein.”
After finding early success with his 1970 single “Tobacco Road,” he began a career as an instrumental innovator. An early adopter of synthesizers, he was perhaps the first to “wear” a keyboard; with this exploration of technology and his unique look Edgar Winter became known for his aesthetic almost as much as for his classic songs.

This is a band with solid chops, solid songs, and a range of styles and influences. An Irish folk singer drawing on the Neil Young songwriting tradition. Declan is a product of the folk-rock busking tradition which produced Damien Dempsey, Mundy, and Paddy Casey; all of of whom O’Rourke served his musical apprenticeship under. O’Rourke’s audience-friendly brand of acoustic-pop brought him multi-platinum success in Ireland and multiple returns to Fairfield.
Here's how renowned Irish folk singer Maura O'Connell described Declan O'Rourke:
"He is a phenomenal writer, singer, musician and entertainer. I can't do justice to his talent with words. I don't say that very often, but in this case it is true."
When someone of O'Connell's stature says that about a fellow Irish folkie, you pay attention. And when someone is referred to as the "Irish Leonard Cohen", you have to check him out.

Greater than a band, the Skatalites were and are an institution, an aggregation of top-notch musicians who didn't merely define the sound of Jamaica, they were the sound of Jamaica across the 60s.
As first wave forefathers, they defined the sound that would become ska, rocksteady, reggae, and the like. Taking their native Jamaica and the surrounding islands by storm, their sound moved with the Caribbean people and found root the world over. The influence of The Skatalites can be felt in second wave bands like The Specials, The English Beat, Bad Manners, and third wavers like Reel Big Fish. Half a century into their career, The Skatalites bring the same fire that’s always drawn audiences to them: up-tempo, explosive, and tight.
Drawing stylistic influence from Otis Redding and Brian McKnight while bearing the gruff vocals of John Hiatt and Dr. John, Broussard radiates soulful New Orleans with a strong essence of rock n roll. Marc Broussard returns to Fairfield for his sixth FTC show, and first performance in The Warehouse.
Marc Broussard's high octane take-off uses no formula at all. Instead he offers a blend of abilities, styles and enthusiasms uniquely adapted to himself on his debut album, Carencro. He calls himself "a white boy singing soul music." But that's deceptive because his music draws from everything he's absorbed. "I feel like I've melded a bunch of things together that people haven't focused on for a long time." In his songs can be heard influences and accents ranging from soul men like Stevie Wonder and Brian McKnight to Louisiana icons like Johnny Allan and G.G. Shin to road warriors like Dave Matthews. What the 32-year old Broussard takes from all of this is a sense of craft and above all, great depth of feeling. That's what makes him so soulful. Well, that and his husky baritone with a range similar to Wonder, or another influence, Donny Hathaway. Like them, Broussard moves up and down the scales without any sign of effort—the hard work he puts into his music isn't meant to show. When it comes to music, Broussard is like a bayou rendition of The Natural.
Broussard places no limit on his ambition. "The kind of artist I'd like to evolve into is Prince," he says. "My ambition is to do the whole thing as well as I can and have people dig it. I want to be a true entertainer." Just don't count on it happening in a predictable way . Marc Broussard is from a place off the maps of conventional pop culture. He might just force us to draw some new ones before he's done.
“Ever since Broussard's 2002 debut, Momentary Setback, the Louisiana-bred artist has been compared by critics to everyone from rock n' blues artist Delbert McClinton to soul greats like Otis Redding.” - Soul Tracks
Booking: Marc Broussard
Best known for his tenure fronting the hugely influential New York Dolls, David Johansen achieved commercial success under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter back in the 80s with his hit song, "Hot Hot Hot."
This jack-of-all-trades is a true chameleon; throughout his career which we’ve seen him him transform from a lipstick-smeared proto-punk hero into an urban blue-eyed soul man and most currently into a tuxedo-clad lounge lizard.
Today, he remains a rock n roll original, an unpredictable iconoclast, and a true cultural innovator.

Misfits trailblazed the horror punk genre with lyrics and imagery inspired by 1950s B-movies about girls and ghouls back in 1977. They’ve since attracted an entirely new, youthful audience that emerge wearing skeleton t-shirts and an attitude to rock. The Glenn Danzig-era classics still sound lively enough to raise the dead, and skulls and Halloween prompt mass slam-dancing singalongs.

Melvin Seals and the Jerry Garcia Band are keepers of the jamband flame, paying tribute to their fallen founder with every note. There are dozens of Grateful Dead tributes and side projects but only one man is fit to carry on as JGB’s frontman.

Anything from ‘average,’ Average White Band has never been quite what you’d expect. They burst onto the Northern soul scene in 1972 opening up for Clapton, mixing classic sounds of Memphis Motown and Philly R&B to produce serious hits including “Cut The Cake” and “Pick Up The Pieces.”
Undeniably funky; AWB packs enough soul and groove to make you move in any sized room. With that in mind, we’re excited for them to test The Warehouse’s limits.
Blue Öyster Cult rose from the 1970s ashes to become one of the nation’s all-time greatest hard-rock ensembles. With an incredible run of classic albums from the 70s through 80s, B.Ö.C. continues to tour hard and loud, kicking out jams at every opportunity.
From humble beginnings right across Long Island’s sound, B.Ö.C. gave us hits including “Burnin’ For You,” the tongue in cheek “Godzilla,” and the ghostly guitar and cowbell of “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper.” Radio hits, record breaking albums, and pop culture recognition on SNL, Blue Öyster Cult is a national treasure and FTC is pleased to welcome them to The Warehouse.
Formed from the ashes of The Yardbirds by Keith Relf and Jim McCartney, Renaissance’s Annie Haslam brought a feminine energy to the male-dominated genre. They were set slightly apart from other prog-rock bands throughout the 70s with talents on par with Genesis, YES, and Emerson Lake and Palmer.

Since the early 90s, former Red House Painters prolific frontman Mark Kozelek has assembled an impressive catalog, releasing one poignant recording after another. The brilliantly-crafted sixth studio album from the celebrated indie folk troubadour might possibly be the most beautifully candid record he has recorded under the Sun Kil Moon guise or any nom de plume." - PopMatters
This fall Sun Kil Moon make its first appearance at FTC, and we couldn't be more excited. Prepare for an intimate performance in an intimate space.
Kevin Griffin got his start writing tightly melodic and distortion-tinged tunes with 90s alt-pop powerhouse Better Than Ezra. The multiple award-winning hit songwriter has scored four #1 singles and sold over 30 million records over the course of his career with artists such as Train, Howie Day, Missy Higgins, Blondie, and more. He’s currently located down in Nashville penning songs for artists across all spectrums of the music industry. He’s also been covered by Taylor Swift - twice! We look forward to a night of Kevin Griffin originals, covers, and collaborations on StageOne.

Coming to FTC in support of their debut album, Fairground Saints are a California based trio of contemporary singer songwriters who channel their creative energies into a charming mix of folk, country, and pop. Though a young band (their debut album was released this August), they have already hit a stride and made a dent in the west coast songwriting circuit. Produced by Matthew Wilder (The Belle Brigade, No Doubt, Christina Aguilera), their self titled debut captures the chemistry and passion that Fairground Saints bring to their performances. Check it out, then come check them out on StageOne.
