Ryan's voice, sometimes compared to Martin Sexton and Ray Lamontagne, is thick, soulful and drives the band's melody with poetic lyrics. With a reggae flair, some twangy elements and plenty of soul, it’s fair to think of Jack Johnson or Citizen Cope when talking about Montbleau's groove and sharp lyrics. In his own regard, Ryan is certainly at the front of the acoustic-singer crowd, especially given that his fanbase originally built up from a grassroots following and word of mouth.
