Choosing life in life's final chapter is the poignant subtext of this new powerful documentary, a lyrical portrait of eight nursing home residents of the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield who make a pilgrimage to Israel.
Offered a seat on the bus for a 10-day tour, the viewer accompanies individuals – average age 91 – in and out of museums, crossing Israeli landscapes from mountains to desert. Their story is told by filmmaker David Gaynes, a native of Weston, who captured the preparations for their trip, their life-changing Israel experience and their return to Connecticut.
Some of the travelers, both Jews and Christians, made the trip using wheelchairs and walkers, overcoming great physical and emotional challenges. They were accompanied by caregivers and staff members. Next Year Jerusalem is a poetic exploration of faith and life, hope and fear, travel and memory in life’s final chapter.
